Chicago Fire FC head north of the border on Saturday night for an Eastern Conference battle against Toronto FC at BMO Field, with both clubs entering the matchup with plenty to play for as the MLS season moves toward its final stretch.
For Chicago, the objective is clear: continue establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. For Toronto, every point is becoming increasingly important as the Reds fight to stay in the playoff conversation.
Chicago Arrive in Toronto With Momentum
The Fire have emerged as one of the more dangerous teams in MLS this season, and the summer arrival of Robert Lewandowski has added another dimension to an already threatening attack.
The Polish superstar has wasted little time making his mark in Chicago. Lewandowski scored twice in his Soldier Field home debut and has continued finding the net since, giving the Fire one of the most accomplished center forwards in league history.
Chicago's most recent MLS match provided another example of his impact. The Fire battled Seattle Sounders FC to a 2-2 draw at Lumen Field, with Maren Haile-Selassie scoring Chicago's first goal before Lewandowski headed home an equalizer in the 82nd minute.
With Lewandowski occupying defenders inside the penalty area, Chicago also have dangerous runners surrounding him. Puso Dithejane has become increasingly influential on the wing, while Philip Zinckernagel and Maren Haile-Selassie give the Fire multiple ways to create chances.
Toronto Fighting for the Playoffs
Toronto FC have shown signs of improvement as the season has progressed and have proven capable of causing problems for some of MLS's biggest teams.
One of their most impressive recent results came in Miami, where Toronto stunned Lionel Messi and Inter Miami with a 2-1 victory. American striker Josh Sargent scored in that win and remains one of the biggest threats Chicago will have to contain Saturday night.
Toronto followed their recent run with a 1-1 draw against New York City FC at BMO Field on August 29. Dániel Sallói scored the equalizer in the 70th minute after NYCFC had taken a first-half lead.
Sargent will likely be the focal point of the Toronto attack, but Chicago will also need to watch Djordje Mihailovic, Theo Corbeanu, and Sallói. Captain Richie Laryea can also create problems when pushing forward from the back.
Chicago Won the First Meeting
These teams have already met once during the 2026 season.
Chicago defeated Toronto 2-1 at Soldier Field on May 23. Robin Lod opened the scoring for the Fire in the 22nd minute before Josh Sargent equalized for Toronto in the 34th.
The deciding moment came in the 65th minute when Andrew Gutman headed home Chicago's second goal to secure all three points.
Saturday gives Toronto an opportunity to return the favor at BMO Field, while Chicago can complete the regular-season sweep.
Key Matchup: Robert Lewandowski vs Toronto's Back Line
Toronto's biggest challenge may simply be keeping Lewandowski away from dangerous positions.
Even when he isn't heavily involved in possession, the 38-year-old striker remains lethal around goal. His movement between center backs can create openings not only for himself but also for Chicago's attacking midfielders and wingers.
Veteran defender Walker Zimmerman could therefore have one of the most important assignments of the night.
If Toronto can prevent Chicago from consistently delivering crosses and passes into Lewandowski, the Reds could force the visitors to attack from less dangerous areas. If Chicago repeatedly finds its No. 9 inside the penalty box, it could become a very long night for the Toronto defense.
Player to Watch: Robert Lewandowski
All eyes will naturally be on Chicago's superstar striker.
Lewandowski has already demonstrated that his finishing ability has translated to Major League Soccer. With Chicago's speed on the wings and creativity behind him, chances are likely to come.
Toronto will know exactly where the danger is coming from. The difficult part will be stopping it.
What Chicago Needs to Do
- Get Lewandowski involved early. Chicago should test Toronto's center backs with crosses and quick combinations around the penalty area.
- Attack Toronto in transition. Dithejane and Haile-Selassie's pace can become dangerous when Toronto pushes numbers forward.
- Keep Josh Sargent quiet. Toronto's striker is capable of turning limited opportunities into goals.
- Control the midfield. Preventing Mihailovic from dictating Toronto's attack could force the Reds into more predictable wide play.
Prediction
Toronto have been difficult to beat lately and playing at BMO Field should give the Reds another boost. But Chicago enter this matchup with more attacking weapons and one of the best pure goalscorers MLS has ever seen.
Expect Toronto to make things difficult, but the Fire should create enough chances to leave Canada with a result.
