Portugal's Journey Through the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Updated: June 2026

Group Stage Review

Portugal entered Group K as one of the favorites to finish first alongside Colombia. The Portuguese opened the tournament strongly before facing their toughest test in the final group-stage match against Colombia.

The highly anticipated showdown ended in a hard-fought 0-0 draw. Although Portugal created several dangerous opportunities and goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced another excellent performance, neither side managed to find a breakthrough. The result allowed Colombia to finish top of Group K with seven points, while Portugal advanced as runners-up with five points.

Round of 32 Challenge

Finishing second means Portugal now faces a significantly tougher knockout route than if they had won the group. Their Round of 32 opponent will be Croatia, one of Europe's most experienced tournament teams.

Croatia's midfield quality, defensive organization and experience make this one of the biggest matches of the opening knockout round. Portugal will rely heavily on Cristiano Ronaldo's leadership, Bruno Fernandes' creativity and Rafael Leão's pace to unlock Croatia's defense.

Portugal's Possible Route to the Final

  • Round of 32: Croatia
  • Round of 16 (if they advance): Winner of Spain vs Austria
  • Quarterfinal: Could feature one of the winners emerging from the United States/Bosnia & Herzegovina side of the bracket or Belgium/Senegal, depending on knockout results.
  • Semifinal: A potential meeting with one of the tournament favorites such as France, Germany, Brazil or another surviving powerhouse remains possible if both teams continue advancing.
  • Final: Portugal could ultimately meet another major contender including Argentina, England, Brazil, France, Germany or Spain depending entirely on results across the opposite side of the bracket.

Can Portugal Win the World Cup?

Portugal unquestionably possesses the talent to lift the trophy. Their squad combines experienced veterans with one of the deepest collections of young talent in international football. However, finishing second in Group K has dramatically increased the difficulty of their path.

Croatia is a dangerous opening opponent, and a likely Round of 16 meeting with Spain would immediately test Portugal against another title contender. Surviving those two matches would build enormous momentum, but every round afterward could feature another elite nation.

Considering Portugal's current performances, squad quality and the difficult knockout bracket, their chances of winning the FIFA World Cup are realistic but challenging. They remain among the tournament's strongest contenders, although they no longer enjoy one of the easier paths after the draw against Colombia.

Prediction

Portugal enters the knockout stage capable of defeating any opponent on their day. If Roberto Martínez's side can overcome Croatia and potentially Spain, confidence will grow dramatically. The Portuguese possess enough attacking quality and defensive organization to make a deep run, but every remaining match will feel like a final.

Predicted Finish: Quarterfinals or Semifinals, with an outside chance of reaching the Final if key players continue performing at their highest level.
